Birth care: preparation and a steady presence
Birth doulas offer non-medical emotional, practical, and informational support before and during labor. Depending on the agreement, preparation may include discussing preferences, helping partners feel involved, and planning communication. A doula does not replace a midwife, obstetrician, nurse, or other licensed clinician.
QUESTIONS TO BRING
- Do we want help preparing for and navigating labor?
- What support would help our chosen birth partner feel involved?
Postpartum care: finding a rhythm at home
Daytime postpartum support focuses on the early weeks with your baby and the practical needs of your household. Scope varies, so discuss newborn care, baby-related tasks, rest opportunities, and how feeding support fits within the provider’s training. Medical concerns belong with your licensed healthcare team.
QUESTIONS TO BRING
- When during the day would help make the biggest difference?
- Which specific tasks should our agreement include?
Overnight support: a plan for the quieter hours
Overnight support can provide another pair of hands for newborn care and agreed feeding routines. Discuss who handles each part of a feed, how the provider communicates with you, and whether the shift is awake care. Sleep and feeding plans should align with advice from your qualified healthcare professionals.
QUESTIONS TO BRING
- How will we handle feeds and handoffs overnight?
- What hours and home setup does the provider need?
You can combine care or begin with a conversation
A birth plan and a postpartum plan can involve different providers. If you want continuity, ask whether one person offers both services and what their availability permits. If you are unsure, start by sharing your timeline, community, and the moments you expect to need the most help.
QUESTIONS TO BRING
- Would the same person provide each kind of care?
- How will our providers communicate with our permission?
This guide supports care planning and does not provide medical advice or promise provider availability. Scope and fees must be confirmed with your chosen provider.
